Research

One of the core objectives of the National Center for Hearing Innovation (NCHI) is to advance and disseminate research that transforms outcomes for children and adults with hearing loss.

NCHI is dedicated to:

  • Conducting and coordinating independent, unbiased studies
  • Validating innovative approaches and interventions
  • Sharing findings to support clinicians, educators, policymakers, and families nationwide

Our research informs practice, strengthens advocacy, and builds the evidence needed to expand access and equity in hearing healthcare and education. Findings are presented at national conferences and published to influence the field globally.

Areas of Focus

Children with Cochlear Implants

Research at NCHI addresses the unique educational and developmental needs of children with cochlear implants (CIs). We examine:

  • Language and literacy outcomes in inclusive classroom settings
  • Cognitive, social, and emotional development and their impact on long-term success
  • Best practices for educators and clinicians supporting students with hearing loss

Our longitudinal studies provide critical data on how children with CIs can achieve age-appropriate skills and thrive in mainstream environments.

Adults with Hearing Loss

While pediatric implantation has been studied extensively, outcomes for adults remain less understood. NCHI prioritizes research that:

  • Identifies the variables that influence adult outcomes
  • Develops and validates rehabilitation strategies to optimize performance
  • Demonstrates efficacy to encourage greater rates of adult implantation and access to care

By focusing on both pediatric and adult populations, we aim to ensure lifespan continuity of research, services, and support.

Current Studies and Initiatives

Longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Cochlear Implants
Examining core language, pragmatic skills, receptive vocabulary, and academic achievement over time to determine trajectories for children with CIs compared to peers.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Children with Hearing Loss
Studying the impact of parent–child interaction therapy when adapted as an intervention for children with hearing loss.

Intensive Literacy Enrichment Activities for Diverse Populations
Designing a summer literacy program for children with hearing loss from diverse and marginalized backgrounds to improve vocabulary and literacy skills through the use of interactive reading strategies.

Why This Research Matters

Currently, there is no Congressional authorization or dedicated funding to support independent research on the education and support of children and adults with cochlear implants. At the same time:

  • The number of children and adults with cochlear implants continues to rise each year.
  • The U.S. Department of Education has identified inclusive education as the gold standard, yet many schools and districts remain unprepared.
  • Adults with hearing loss face significant barriers to implantation and rehabilitation services, resulting in underutilization of proven technology.

By conducting and sharing independent, unbiased research, NCHI provides the evidence base needed to:

  • Educate referring physicians, audiologists, and educators
  • Support advocacy and policy efforts
  • Demonstrate efficacy to insurers and consumers
  • Ultimately, improve the lives of children and adults with hearing loss

NCHI serves as a national hub for meta-analysis and collaborative research, aggregating data and disseminating results.
