Education Model

The River School

The River School opened its doors in 2000 in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington, DC, with the mission to transform the education of young children with cochlear implants by providing a learning environment optimized for their needs. From acoustically optimized classrooms, to a unique co-teaching model that pairs a master's level educator with a speech-language pathologist in every classroom, River's transdisciplinary support team ensures that every child has the tools to thrive academically and socially.

Today, River continues to provide an inclusive educational model tailored to the needs of children who access sounds through hearing technologies. As a result, 87% of River students with cochlear implants, regardless of background, achieve age-appropriate spoken language within just 36 months.
